Mentored Access to Programs in Science (MAPS)

In the spring of 2019, Professors Chris Jones, Prinicipal Investigator and Ellen Veomett, Co-Principal Investigator received a $1m grant from the National Science Foundation’s S-STEM program. This grant provides scholarships for low-income students in STEM disciplines. This grant follows the previous five-year award which finished in the summer of 2019. The local program is known as MAPS (Mentored Access to Programs in Science) and the first iteration was very successful with students graduating in STEM at a rate in excess of 80%. Students have gone on to graduate school and careers in science, and thanks to SMC funding have a full tuition scholarship for their four years at Saint Mary’s. The new program will see incoming students in the fall of 2020
