Professor Veomett will be presenting a Fac Chat on September 30, 2020, 1-2 pm.

Make your Vote Count: Using Mathematics to Detect and Prevent Gerrymandering, (Meeting ID: 933 8750 9885)

How can mathematics be used to increase fairness in voting? Perhaps your instinct is that the math is simple: just count the votes. But when it comes to the geometry of redistricting and the impact of votes in each district, mathematics can be used to reveal voter suppression and disenfranchisement. In this Fac Chat, Professor Veomeet will discuss the practice of gerrymandering, how it happens, its history in the United States, and the tools that mathematicians have recently used in order to combat gerrymandering. Please join us as we learn one way that mathematics is fighting to protect our democracy!
