College Communications talks to Ellen Veomett, Mathematics & Computer Science Department Chair about her research on whether or not districts have been gerrymandered. Veomett and her collaborators have created a new metric called the Geography and Election Outcome metric or GEO Metric to detect gerrymandering. Students in Professor Veomett’s January Term course, Math in Our Democracy: Detecting and Preventing Gerrymandering will get to work with the new GEO Metric and other metrics and techniques to address partisan and racial gerrymandering. Saint Mary’s Magazine’s article on Professor Veomett’s earlier gerrymandering research can be found here.
