Math Games is a community engagement program that the Saint Mary’s Mathematics and Computer Science Department has been running each spring semester since 2012. Through this program, Saint Mary’s students work on fun math-themed activities with local middle school or high school students several times during the week for about ten weeks. We work with educationally under-served students who are under-represented in the mathematical sciences.
During the weekly sessions, Saint Mary’s undergraduate students and faculty mentors teach mathematical games and ideas to the students, expanding their understanding of what mathematics is, and helping them develop appreciation for and comfort with mathematics. The culminating event of this project is an afternoon of fun mathematical challenges on our campus.
We are currently partnering with College Track Oakland, and would love to talk with your program if you think your students could benefit as well!
If you’re either a possible community partner who would like to learn more or a Saint Mary’s student interested in participating, please contact Prof. Ellen Veomett.
