## Guide to First-Year Non-Calculus Courses

#### Math 3: Finite Mathematics

- Primarily of interest for
**Business Administration**and related majors. - Recommended to be taken in the first year.
- Enrollment requires Math Placement Level 2 or higher.

#### Math 4: Introduction to Probability and Statistics

- Of particular value for majors in
**Communications, Sociology,**and**social sciences.** - Enrollment requires Math Placement Level 2 or higher.

#### Math 5: Mathematical Concepts for Elementary School Teachers

- Exclusively for education-focused students in
**Justice, Community, and Leadership**and/or**Teachers for Tomorrow.** - Does
*not*satisfy the Core Mathematical Understanding learning goal. - Enrollment requires Math Placement Level 2 or higher.

#### Math 10: The Art and Practice of Mathematics

- Designed for those without a specific math requirement or with anxieties about mathematics.
- Topics vary but include introductions to topics such as to cryptology, game theory, statistics, graph theory, and geometry.
- Prerequisite: English 5 and Collegiate Seminar 1 (So this is not open to first-year students.)

**Note:** If you need to take Math 3,4 or 5 and you are placed in Level 1, you are required to take Math 2 first in order to put yourself in the best position to succeed in your required math class. Math 2 does not satisfy the Core Mathematical Understanding learning goal. Please consult your advisor about this.
